Love, and unusually mild winter temperatures, are in the air in Flagstaff for this Valentine’s Day weekend.  There’s plenty to do with your special someone or the entire family.

Love in FlagstaffThis weekend, Friday and Saturday, NAU’s School of Music sponsors its annual Jazz Madrigal Festival, one of the largest festivals of its kind in the Southwest.  Over 140 school ensembles will perform, including a host concert with choirs from NAU and professional groups of national and international stature. Unfortunately, the main event is SOLD OUT! But there is a lot more to enjoy: Download a complete festival schedule.

In a limited Valentine’s weekend production, long-time Theatrikos Theatre Company actors Tony and Linda Sutera will present three performances of A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters. The piece is comprised of letters exchanged over a lifetime between two people who grew up together, went their separate ways, but continued to share confidences. As the actors read the letters aloud, what is created is an evocative, touching, frequently funny, but always telling pair of character studies. Performances on Thursday evening (7:30 p.m.) and Saturday (2:00 p.m.), will be at the downtown Doris Harper-White Playhouse (11 W. Cherry Ave.).  The Sunday evening performance, at 7:30 p.m., is a dinner theater performance at the 7 Ate 9 Restaurant (2500 S. Woodlands Village Blvd.) between Taverna and Teppan Fuji.  Three meal options available.  Tickets are $8 – $13.  Dinner theater $25.  Theatrikos Box Office: (928) 774-1662

It’s also the final weekend for the Theatrikos production of Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, on Friday and Saturday (7:30 p.m.) and Sunday (2:00 p.m.). Book tickets at the Theatrikos website.

There’s even more theater in Flagstaff this weekend as the NAU Department of Theatre presents Touch, the story of a young man caught between the loss of his greatest love and the Cosmos, dealing with the intimacy and the enormity of the heart – a gripping, heart-wrenching, and tender drama.  In the University Studio Theatre.  Friday and Saturday (7:30 p.m.), and Sunday (2:00 p.m.) Tickets at NAU’s Central Ticket Office: $14 adults, $12 seniors and NAU employees, $8 youth, and $2 for NAU students with ID.

On Friday evening (8:00 p.m.), it’s the Steep Canyon Rangers in concert at Flagstaff’s Orpheum Theater, with their original, freewheeling, high-energy approach to bluegrass.  “True bluegrass, when well done, is a thing of art, and the Steep Canyon Rangers are the genre’s current Rembrandt.” – Examiner.com.  Tickets are $17 – $20.

On Saturday afternoon, the Museum of Northern Arizona hosts Meet the Artist: Scotty Mitchell, at 2:00 p.m. in the Lockett Gallery.  Learn about her art, and the nuts and bolts of being an onsite landscape painter.  A show of her paintings – Dialog with Beauty — is on display at MNA through Sunday.  Included with regular museum admission.

Friday is also 2nd Friday Science Night at Flagstaff’s famed Lowell Observatory.  The once-a-month Science Night events feature hands-on activities and presentations. This month’s theme features Simple Machines with programs at 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00 p.m.  Free with regular observatory admission.

On Saturday evening, the Flagstaff Arts Council presents music by Dave McGraw & Mandy Fer.  This innovative musical duo from the Pacific Northwest once again bring their folk and rootsy Americana music to Flagstaff in a special 8th Annual Valentine’s Concert, including a wine and chocolate tasting.  The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Coconino Center for the Arts.  A matinee concert at 3:00 p.m. has been added minus wine and chocolate.  Tickets are $20.

Also on Saturday evening, Flagstaff Recreation Services hosts a Valentine’s Night Skate at the Jay Lively Ice Arena (1650 N. Turquoise Drive).  Skate in the mood-lit arena from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.  $20 per couple.  Music, refreshments and a picture of your fun night.  An age 16 and over event.
